Product Quality In General:
DPH Trading offers a big variety of products from different manufacturers.
Some manufacturers are very meticulous with details, and pay attention to avoid even little flaws. - Most manufacturers throughout Europe and Japan are typically very good at delivering uniform high-quality products. In Denmark, Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Groendahl are brilliant exponents of companies supplying products of extremely high quality.
DPH Trading quality-inspects all articles, and if defects or flaws are found, its categtory is changed, to 2nd quality, item with defects etc.
Brand New article (factory first)
When an article is categorized as New article (factory first) it means, that the article comes directly from the manufacturer, is a factory first and has no flaws or defects.
Brand New article (Factory Second)
When an article is categorized as Brand New (2nd), the manufacturer didn´t find the quality 100 % all right, and consequently they have chosen to sell the article at a lower price as a factory second. Most factories mark such articles with a scratch through the factory mark.

1. Quality - Factory First
This quality covers antique and old FACTORY FIRST articlesas well as the annual items in FACTORY FIRST quality.
Re Antique and old items 1st. quality:The quality is fully equivalent to the corresponding new article. Old articles are, as a rule, not delivered in (old) original boxes, they are packed in up-to-date wrapping to protect the article from damages during transport.
Re Annual items - new as well as old - 1st quality: Annual items from the present year is obviously brand new, and delivered in the original packing, whereas old annual items are, of course, not delivered in (old) original boxes, but in up-to-date wrapping, protecting the articles against damages during transport. The quality of new as well as old annual items is of course fully equivalent to the quality produced in the year in question - meaning that the article appears as new, without any flaws or defects. You should however, have some understanding that a for example 75-year old plate may haveinsignificant little scratches, just as the production-techniques have improved over the years.
2. Quality - Factory Second
This quality covers Antique/old items in factory second.
Antique/old articles that have been rated less that 100 per cent perfect by the manufacturer's quality control, compared to the usual quality. Most factories mark such articles with a scratch through the factory mark. As a rule old articles are not delivered in original (old) boxes, but in up-to-date packing, protecting the articles from damages during transport.
Annual items - new as well as old - factory seconds
This catagory includes all annual items of 2nd quality (annual items:
articles with year or the like, i.e. articles produced in a limited edition, or for a limited period - after which the moulds are destroyed to ensure that the production can never be revived.)
The manufacturer or the quality-inspection at DPH Trading has found, that the quality of this article does not live up to the quality of the corresponding factory first item, so it is sold at a lower price as a factory second. Most factories mark such items with a scratch through the factory mark.
Read more about 2nd quality below..
Annual items from the current year are brand new, and therefore delivered in the original packing. The old annual items are not delivered in original boxes, but in an up-to-date wrapping, protecting the article from damages during transport.
Articles with flaws or defects:
When an article is placed in this catagory, it has a defect or flaw. Or maybe is has been repaired. If you are interested in such items, please let us know, and we will inform you of the specific defect or flaw of the article in question.
2nd Quality - Factory seconds:When an item is considered a factory second, it means that it has a, to most people, insignificant flaw - not disturbing the overall impression. Most people would probably not even notice such minor flaws - but to some collectors it is crucial that the article is a factory first. Whether you want a factory second or not is actually more a question of temperament than anything else, since most factory seconds look like factory firsts, and their utility value is the same. Actually a factory second article can, in the overall impression, be more beautiful than a similar factory first article. For example, the painting or the colours of the figurine (or whatever item it could be) may be extremely beautiful, but unfortunately it has a small air-bubble-hole on the back, thus becoming a factory second.
Bing & Groendahl articles - 2nd quality:
Bing & Groendahl (B&G) has marked all their factory seconds with a scratch throught the factory mark - i.e. through "The Three Towers"
B&G Annual items were very rarely released in 2nd quality, and they are therefore rare to find. If a B&G annual item is placed in the catagory 2nd quality, it is most probably an article that we at DPH have found, during our quality-inspection, does not match the usual quality of a B&G factory first, and therefore it is sold as a factory second at a lower price. Please note, when we say annual articles, we do not include figurines, vases, tableware etc., as these have been produced in 1st as well as 2nd quality by B&G.
Royal Copenhagen articles - 2nd quality:
All factory seconds from Royal Copenhagen are marked with a small scratch through the factory mark - i.e. through "The Three Waves".
Until 1972 both 1st and 2nd quality annual items from Royal Copenhagen were available in the retail-shops throughout Denmark. From 1972 most articles that did not meet the demands of the factory standards were scrapped. From 1972 employees have been allowed to purchase socalled employee-items - often marked with 2 or 3 scratches through "The Three Waves". This does not mean that the articles are 3rd or 4th quality.
In our experience the employee-items correspond to a usual factory second (with one scratch) - with almost no significance to the overall impression. To our knowledge only the Royal factory sale on Nordre Fasanvej in Copenhagen and Holmegaardsværket in Fensmark have been selling factory seconds, from 1972. Therefore only few factory seconds are available from 1972. Please note, that when we speak of annual items, we are not talking about figurines, vases, tableware etc., as these were and are produced in 1st as well as 2nd quality by Royal Copenhagen.
DPH has a large stock of 1st and 2nd quality articles. If we have a specific article in stock in 2nd quality, it will emerge from our product page for the article in question, as such products will be mentioned in the catagory Brand New article (2nd quality) and/or 2nd quality. If an article is not mentioned as factory second, we do not have the article in question in 2nd quality in stock.
