1896 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate,
designed by F.A.Hallin, bears the title
New Moon over the Snow Covered trees.
Bing & Grondahl's Christmas plate from
1896 depicts a typical Danish winter
scenery, snowcovered firs in the moonlight.
In 1805 only 2% of Denmark was wood, and
this should soon prove to be problematic.
After the bombardment of Copenhagen in
1807 the English seized the Danish fleet,
and when the king order a new fleet to
be made, it turned out that Denmark did
not have the oak tree necessary for this
purpose. As a result King Christian VII
issued the fredskov (protect woods) law,
stating that woods cut not be cut down,
unless new trees were plantet. State woods
were also established. During the period
from 1805 to 1850 firs, which until then
ahd not been used i Denmark) were planted
in parst of the Jutland moor. Since that
time the wood territories of Denmark has
increased to 12 %, at it is the goal of
Denmark's governmaen that by 2105, the
300-year anniversary of the Fredskov law,
20 % of Denmark's area must be covered by
woods. In Denmark there is free access to
all woods owned by the state.
