1897 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate,

Christmas Meal of the Sparrows.
Bing & Grondahl's Christmasplate from
1897 shows yet another typical scenery
from Denmark. At wintertime most wild
birds and animals have difficulty finding
food in the Scandinavian countries, where
winter can be very cold. In 1897 Denmark was
primarily a farming community, and it was
therefore common that farmers set up
sheafs of grain for the birds around
Christmas time. Today this custom has sur-
vived,and people in the country as well as
in the cities feed the birds at wintertime,
not with sheafs of grain, more often people
have a bird table in their gardens, where
birds are fed bread and grains.
