1898 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate
1898 Bing & Grondahl Christmas plate,
designed by Fanny Garde, bears the title
Christmas Roses and Christmas Star.
Bing & Grondahl's christmas plate from
1898 depicts Christmas roses around the
Christmas star. The artist may have been
inspired by the legend of the Christmas star,
where a little girl went out into the field
with her fateher on the night that Jesus
was born. When the shepherds went on their
way to find the child, the little girl
followed. When they found Jesus in the
stable, the wise men and the shepherds
offered Jesus presents, but the little girl
had nothing. She cried and prayed that
the mother and child would have a happy
life.Suddenly as she prayed roses grew
where her tears had fallen, she gathered
the roses and gave them to Jesus.
Whether this was the inspiration for the
plate is not certain, but it is a fact,
that the Christmas rose almost always
blooms around Christmas time, as one of
the few flowers which can bloom in spite
of frost and snow.
