Through times Kronborg Castle has had a chaotic history with extensive rebuilding and renovation, expansions etc. Especially foreigners associate Kronborg with Shakespears drama of "Hamlet-the prince of Denmark", while to the danes Kronborg is regarded as a national and historic monument. Kronborg has been used with great versatility, as it has among other things been a fortress for slaves and barracks for the danish army, and even played an important part in the danish battles against England during the Napoleon wars in 1801
