Frederik August Hallin was originally employed at the faience factory Aluminia. Afterwards he was employed at Royal Copenhagen in the period 1885-1895, where he worked as an underglaze painter.

He is best known for his time at Bing & Grøndahl 1895-1935, where he made the first ever Christmas plate.
