Porcelain and Ceramic Figures of Cows and Horses
Cows and horses have been popular motifs in porcelain and ceramics for many years. They come in many different expressions – from lifelike reproductions to more stylized figures – and are created by both Royal Copenhagen, Bing & Groendahl, Lyngby Porcelain, Just Andersen and Joghus.
At DPH – Danish Porcelain House you will find figures of cows and horses in porcelain and ceramics – from classic figures to newer versions that function both as decoration and in a collection.
From Agriculture to Porcelain
The cow is often associated with calm, stability, and the close life in the countryside, while the horse is known for its strength, endurance, and willingness to cooperate.
Both animals have had a natural place in everyday life for many generations. Perhaps that is also why they still feel so familiar – and still make them figures many want to keep, collect, and pass on.
Cow Figures in Porcelain and Ceramics – A Piece of Danish Rural Life
Cows and calves are a recurring motif among several manufacturers. The figures reflect a time when cattle were a natural part of life on farms and involved in everyday life in the countryside.
You will find among others black-and-white cows, Jersey cows, calves, and bulls in various expressions. Some figures show the animals in calm moments, while others have more movement and personality.
The expression ranges from very lifelike to simpler – both in porcelain and ceramics – and covers a wide range in style and character.
Horse Figures in Porcelain and Ceramics – From Workhorse to Collector's Item
The horse is a motif that recurs among several manufacturers. Especially the classic workhorses are prominent, and the figures clearly show the strength and calm that the horse was known for in agriculture.
Among the figures you will find both powerful stallions, calm workhorses, and lively foals. Some models emphasize the horse's muscular build, while others focus more on movement and lightness.
Several horse figures are relatively large and demanding to produce, and therefore they are often produced in fewer numbers. This also means that some figures can be difficult to find today – but at DPH – Danish Porcelain House you have the opportunity to join the waiting list if you are looking for a specific one.
Artists Behind Horse and Cow Figures
Several of the most famous figures of horses and cows have been created by artists who had a special ability to capture the animals' expression and movement.
At Royal Copenhagen, Knud Kyhn is one of the most prominent names, known for his detailed and lively animal figures in both porcelain and stoneware. Jeanne Grut stands behind some of the rarer figures of Jersey cows, which today are sought after among collectors.
At Bing & Groendahl you will find models created by Svend Jespersen, Laurits Jensen and Sveistrup Madsen. Their figures range from calm, naturalistic depictions to more lively motifs with clear movement.
Common to many of the figures is that they not only show the animals but also manage to reproduce their character – something that still makes them interesting today.
How to Use Animal Figures in Your Interior Design
Figures of cows and horses can be used in several ways in interior design. A larger horse figure can serve as a natural focal point on a shelf or a table, while smaller figures of cows and calves can create a calm and cohesive atmosphere.
By combining porcelain and ceramics, you can create variation and give the interior a more personal touch. The figures work both alone, together with other decorations, and as part of a larger collection.
Cows and Horses as Collectibles
Figures of cows and horses appeal both to collectors of animal figures and to those interested in Danish design and porcelain.
Some collect specific animals or breeds, while others go after designers or manufacturers. Whatever you are looking for, the selection ranges from the familiar to the rarer.
