Bing & Grøndahl Belgian stallion no. 2234 stoneware figurine

Bing & Grøndahl Belgian stallion no. 2234 is a striking stoneware figurine with great weight in both form and expression. The figurine is modelled by Svend Jespersen and depicts the powerful Belgian stallion with a broad chest, strong legs, and a calm, steady stance. It is a horse figurine that exudes working strength and classic animal representation, while also having the warm, lively character that distinguishes good Danish stoneware.

The dark brown glaze plays beautifully together with lighter areas on harness, girth, and legs, which gives the figurine depth and highlights the modelling. The mane is sharply defined, the head slightly turned, and the whole body is executed with a sense for the breed's compact build. It is precisely this naturalistic depiction that makes the figurine interesting for collectors of both Bing & Grøndahl, horse figurines, and Danish design with animals as a motif.

As a vintage figurine, it also has the special quality that it brings history and personality into the interior. A stoneware figurine like this works beautifully on a shelf, in a display cabinet or as a decorative detail on a side table, where it adds warm shades and a more personal expression. It is also ideal as a gift for horse enthusiasts or for the collector who appreciates older decorative art and figurines with character.

At DPH - Danish Porcelain House, we are fond of figurines like this because they show how much atmosphere and craftsmanship there is in older Danish design. Belgian stallion no. 2234 is a fine example of how an animal figurine in stoneware can be both a collector's item and a decorative part of the home today.
