Royal Copenhagen stoneware bowl with monkey and snake no. 21738

Royal Copenhagen stoneware bowl with monkey and snake no. 21738 is a characterful piece of Danish ceramics, where bowl and figure work merge into a single expression. The motif is lively and narrative: A monkey leans over the edge from one side, while a snake coils up along the rim on the opposite side. The interplay between the two animals gives the bowl a dramatic and almost fairy-tale-like atmosphere, which makes it much more than an ordinary bowl.

The design is associated with Knud Kyhn, who is known for his animal motifs for Royal Copenhagen and for his sure sense of form, movement, and materiality. Here this is clearly seen in the modeled details, where both the monkey's face, paws, and posture as well as the snake's winding form give the bowl personality from every angle. The glaze appears in light shades with darker brownish areas and bluish tones, which emphasize the depth of the surface and the organic expression.

It is a stoneware bowl that appeals to both collectors of Royal Copenhagen, admirers of Knud Kyhn, and everyone who appreciates Danish design with figurative strength. The bowl works beautifully as decorative applied art in the display cabinet, on the shelf, or as a special feature on a table, where it adds history, craftsmanship, and a personal touch to the home. Older design objects like this in particular have a special value, because they are created with a durability and artistic quality that make them relevant also in today's interior design.

For the collector, model number 21738 is an important identification, and for the interior it is a piece of ceramics that stands out with its unusual motif and strong narrative. It is the type of object one notices immediately, and which often becomes the beginning of a conversation.
