Royal Copenhagen Chinese opium smoker figurine no. 2342

Royal Copenhagen figurine no. 2342 depicts a Chinese opium smoker in a calm, introspective posture. The figurine is seated kneeling with the long pipe raised to the mouth, and the entire expression is characterized by silence, concentration, and an almost ceremonial calm. The white porcelain combined with gilding and brown decoration gives the motif a distinctive character, where both the costume, hair, and the small details of the pipe stand out clearly.

The motif is modeled by Arno Malinowski, who is known for his lively and well-balanced porcelain figurines. Here, his sure sense of the figure's posture and body language is seen in the interplay between the soft folds in the costume, the slightly bent neck, and the finely modeled hands. The high collar with gold edge, the small earrings, and the long braid emphasize the figure's oriental inspiration and make the model a decorative figurine with a distinct historical style.

This porcelain figurine is executed as overglaze and has a glossy, light surface, where the golden details add warmth and depth. It is beautifully suited as part of a collection of Royal Copenhagen figurines, B&G figurines, or other porcelain figurines with people and cultural motifs. At the same time, it stands beautifully alone in a display cabinet, on a shelf, or as a characterful detail in an interior with classic decorative arts and Danish design history.

For collectors, Royal Copenhagen no. 2342 is an interesting figurine motif because it stands out from the more common child figurines and animal figurines. It is precisely the special story, the calm atmosphere, and Arno Malinowski's modeling work that make the figurine worth noticing. A porcelain figurine like this adds personality and history to the home and is at the same time a beautiful example of craftsmanship created to be preserved and appreciated through many years.
