In the motif at the center of this bowl, the man has a wife, family, and child.
The series of Thorvaldsen relief plates features four motifs that relate both to the four seasons and to four ages of man: spring, summer, autumn, and winter: childhood, youth, adulthood, and old age. The plates are made in bisque, meaning unglazed porcelain, and the motifs are created in beautiful relief in the white neoclassical style, in which Thorvaldsen was one of the foremost artists.
