Royal Copenhagen Christmas Plaquettes – the small Christmas tradition since 1984
In 1984, Royal Copenhagen launched the series of Christmas plaquettes as a supplement to the classic Christmas plates from 1908.
The mini Christmas plates measure approx. 8 cm in diameter and are made in blue underglaze on white porcelain – the same technique as the larger plates, just in a more compact format.
Each year, a new motif is released with the year incorporated. The motifs depict well-known Danish buildings and cultural heritage sites such as Børsen, Amalienborg, Hans Christian Andersen’s House, Dybbøl Mill and Roskilde Cathedral. – It is Danish culture in miniature.
A small series with annual dates and motifs that can be brought out year after year and find its permanent place in the home – whether you collect them, give them as a gift, or simply choose the one year that holds special meaning.

How to use the small Christmas plaquettes
The compact size makes the Christmas plaquettes surprisingly easy to style.
They can hang individually or be grouped together, where annual dates and motifs create a calm and graphic expression. They do not require an entire wall but can easily fit in a small hallway, by a window, or as part of an existing plate wall.
Many also choose to include them in the table setting in December. The small diameter makes them suitable as a base for a tea bag, a piece of confectionery, or a small serving at the coffee table. Their size also makes them suitable as personal place cards at Christmas dinner or anniversaries. Choose a year that matches the guest’s birth year or a meaningful occasion and place the mini plate at each setting together with a small name card. It is a simple way to put the porcelain to use – not only hang it on the wall.
As they are made of porcelain, they are suitable for regular use and can be brought out year after year as part of a lasting Christmas tradition.
Choose a year with meaning
For many, the year makes all the difference. A Christmas plaquette can be chosen as a birth year, a wedding year, a child’s first Christmas, or an anniversary. When the year is incorporated into the motif, the plaquette becomes a tangible memory – not just a decoration.
Royal Copenhagen has released the series since 1984, which means there is today a wide selection of years available. Some choose to collect several consecutive years and let the series grow over time. Others select the one year that holds personal significance.
In the period 1999–2007, Bing & Groendahl also released a series of Christmas plaquettes. For collectors, these can serve as a natural supplement to Royal Copenhagen’s editions and offer the opportunity to expand a collection with additional years and motifs from the same tradition.
Whether you choose Royal Copenhagen alone or combine with Bing & Groendahl, it can be the beginning of a small Christmas tradition that develops year after year.
