Royal Copenhagen Man with scythe figure no. 685 Christian Thomsen

Royal Copenhagen figure no. 685 depicts a man with a scythe in a calm and contemplative moment in the midst of work. The figure portrays rural life with an earthy strength, where the standing man rests over the tool, while sheaves and scythe create a story of harvest, toil, and everyday life in the countryside. It is a porcelain figure with distinct character and a classic world of motifs, which appeals to both collectors and those who appreciate Danish decorative art with history.

The design was made by Christian Thomsen for Royal Copenhagen, and the motif is a fine example of the artisanal and folk figures that have made the factory's older figures sought-after. The blue upper garment, the light trousers, the wide hat, and the naturalistic motif bring the figure to life, while the scythe and the sheaves emphasize the connection to agriculture, harvest work, and life in the field. The calm posture gives the figure an almost narrative quality, which makes it exciting to observe from several angles.

This agricultural figure is made of porcelain and specified as underglaze. This contributes to the soft sheen and the clear fields of color, which suit the motif so well. As a craft figure and peasant figure, it fits beautifully into a collection of Royal Copenhagen figures, but it also works strongly on its own in the interior, where it can add personality, cultural history, and a touch of Danish design tradition to the home.

Older porcelain figures like this have a special ability to create warmth and presence in modern homes. When you choose vintage porcelain with history, it is also a way to appreciate good craftsmanship and give lasting quality objects new life. The figure is an obvious gift for collectors, for those interested in agriculture, or for anyone who appreciates classic figures from Royal Copenhagen.
