About the item
Christmas in the old farmyard from 1985 is an atmospheric Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, where winter calm, rural idyll and Christmas lights come together in one classic motif. Seen from the darker farm building in the foreground, the scene opens up towards a snow-covered, four-winged farm with illuminated windows, and it is precisely that contrast between shadow and light that gives this year's plate a special story of homely warmth in the midst of the winter cold.
The motif is finely composed with several details that make the scene vivid. On the left a ladder can be seen up against the wall, on the right a wagon in the farmyard, and in the foreground stands a cat, which turns towards the light from the buildings. The cat adds presence and everyday life to the motif, while the bright star above the farm underscores the quiet poetry of Christmas Eve. It is a motif that not only shows an old farm, but also conveys the feeling of being on the threshold of the secure fellowship of Christmas.
This year edition was produced by Bing & Grøndahl, whose Christmas plate series began as early as 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series. Since then, a new plate has been issued every year, and the 1985 edition continues the series' special ability to unite Danish Christmas atmosphere, narrative motif art and the classic blue-and-white porcelain expression. Edvard Jensen is associated with this title, and Christmas in the old farmyard stands as a fine representative of the year editions where the close and recognizable winter motif is at the center.
Each year edition was produced in a limited number, and after the final firing of the year the mold was destroyed. Therefore, each Christmas plate is a completed release that has its own place in the collection. At the same time, older Christmas plates are a beautiful way to carry quality art and Danish design history forward into modern homes. They add personality, tradition and sustainable value, because they are created to last and to be used and enjoyed for many years.
From 1905 onwards, Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates are suitable for food, and this year edition can therefore also be used as a small cake plate or for Christmas rice pudding with almonds. During the rest of the year, it also works beautifully as wall decoration, and on the back there are two holes for hanging.
