Seltmann Swedish Landscapes plaque / plate, Öland, 1981

Seltmann Swedish Landscapes plaque / plate from 1981 with the motif Öland is an atmospheric porcelain plaque that brings together several of the island's characteristic landscape features in one blue-and-white motif. On the front appear the landscape name "Öland" and the year "1981", and the central motif shows an open Swedish landscape with large clouds across the sky, a stone setting in the foreground, a building and a lighthouse in the distance as well as windmills and a long bridge stretching across the water at the bottom of the motif.

This very composition gives the plaque a vivid and narrative expression. The open terrain, the historic stones, the clear man-made traces and the bright horizon create a fine sense of Öland's distinctive nature and cultural history. The blue decoration works beautifully with both light and darker shades, giving the motif depth, while the decorative border with blue floral and plant ornamentation ties the motif together with the rest of the series.

Seltmann Weiden produced the Swedish Landscapes series for the Swedish market, and each plaque represents one of Sweden's traditional landscapes. This makes this Öland plaque an obvious choice for collectors of Seltmann Swedish landscape plaques, for those with a connection to Öland, or for those who simply appreciate blue-and-white porcelain with a landscape motif. The shared border also makes it easy to combine different landscapes on the wall or in a plate rack, without the expression becoming restless.

What is special about this series is that it is not only made to be looked at. The plaque may be used for food and works well, for example, as a cake plate or for a smaller serving. As it is also dishwasher safe, you can easily put it to use in everyday life and let the Swedish porcelain motif become part of the table setting.

On the back are "Seltmann Weiden", "Bavaria W. Germany", "Qualitats Porzellan" and "Begrænsad Upplaga". The last text indicates that the plaque is issued in a limited edition. On the back there are also two holes for hanging, so it is also well suited as wall decoration. For those who appreciate older porcelain with history, it is a fine way to give good craftsmanship new life in a modern home.
