Bing & Grøndahl Girl with sheep figurine no. 2010 Axel Locher

Girl with sheep from Bing & Grøndahl is a porcelain figurine with a calm and intimate motif from life in the countryside. The figurine depicts a young girl in a long blue dress and headscarf, surrounded by her sheep on an uneven base that brings to mind field and grass-covered ground. In her hand she holds a pair of wooden clogs, and the whole scene conveys a quiet story of farming, animal husbandry, and everyday life in a simple, poetic formal language.

It is precisely this down-to-earth portrayal that makes the figurine so full of character. Axel Locher has created an agricultural figurine in which posture, gaze, and the interaction between girl and animals bring the motif to life. The blue dress stands beautifully against the light sheep and the white porcelain base, and the soft transitions in the underglaze emphasize the figurine's classical expression. As a farmer figurine and occupational figurine, it naturally connects to themes such as farm life, livestock, and Danish figurative art.

The figurine belongs to the Realisme series, and this is clearly seen in the naturalistic treatment of both human and animal. The sheep are modeled with fine variations in their positions, so that the group appears lively when viewed from several angles. This makes the figurine suitable for placement where it can be enjoyed freestanding on a shelf, in a display cabinet, or as part of a collection of Bing & Grøndahl figurines and other porcelain figurines with a motif from country life.

Older porcelain figurines like this one have a special ability to add personality and history to the home. They are created to last, to be collected, and to delight new generations, and that is precisely why vintage porcelain is also a beautiful choice for those who appreciate fine craftsmanship and wish to give classical design new life in a contemporary interior. The figurine is at the same time an obvious gift idea for collectors or for anyone who is fond of rural motifs and Danish porcelain history.
