Bing & Grøndahl figure no. 4032 Cain man and child with fruit

Bing & Grøndahl figure no. 4032 is a striking porcelain figure titled Cain, modelled by Kai Nielsen. The figure shows a nude male form in a powerful, slightly forward-bent posture, while a child stands close by his leg. Around the figure is seen a rich abundance of fruit, which winds around the body and the base and gives the motif both weight, movement and symbolic depth.

The white Blanc de Chine porcelain highlights Kai Nielsen's formal language in the most beautiful way. Without colours and decoration, the eye focuses on the sculptural lines, the soft transitions and the contrast between the adult figure, the child and the organic fruit motifs. This gives the sculpture a calm, almost classical expression, while at the same time the composition appears lively and dramatic from all angles.

As a Bing & Grøndahl figure, this model carries the special Danish tradition of art porcelain, where sculpture and craftsmanship meet. Kai Nielsen is known for figures with character, movement and materiality, and this is clearly felt here. The motif makes the figure interesting both for collectors of Bing & Grøndahl, for those seeking porcelain figures by Kai Nielsen, and for interiors with sculptural elements in white porcelain.

A figure like this adds personality and history to the home. It stands beautifully on its own in a display cabinet, on a shelf or as part of a collection of classic porcelain figures and other art objects. Older porcelain with a strong formal language is at the same time a sustainable choice, because quality objects created to last can continue to be used, appreciated and passed on through generations.
