Royal Copenhagen The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep figurine no. 1276

The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep from Royal Copenhagen is a porcelain figurine with a clear reference to H.C. Andersen's beloved fairy tale. The figurine depicts the iconic moment when the two sit close together on the chimney, and the motif contains both romance, adventure and the quiet tension that makes the story so memorable. It is a figurine that speaks directly to collectors of Danish porcelain and to those who are fond of classic stories told through form and details.

The design was executed by Christian Thomsen, and the figurine is modelled with great attention to posture and atmosphere. The shepherdess is seen in a light dress with soft folds, hat and shepherd's staff, while the chimney sweep sits close by her side in his dark outfit. They are placed on a brick chimney with ladder and roof-shaped base, which emphasizes the dramatic scene of the story and gives the figurine an almost theatrical expression. The overglaze decoration contributes to the warm colour effect and the fine nuances in both faces, clothing and brickwork.

As a porcelain figurine, this is a model that functions both as an art object and as a collector's figurine. It fits beautifully in an arrangement with other fairy tale figurines, Royal Copenhagen figurines or classic Danish decorative arts, but can also stand alone as a characterful feature in the décor. The motif makes it an obvious gift idea for someone who collects fairy tale figurines, Danish porcelain or figurines with literary and cultural-historical significance.

Older porcelain figurines like this have a special charm because they carry storytelling, craftsmanship and lasting quality forward to new generations. Choosing a figurine with history is also a way to give good design new life and let classic porcelain have a natural place in a modern home.
