Royal Copenhagen stoneware figurine no. 20244 African boy with cat

Royal Copenhagen stoneware figurine no. 20244 depicts an African boy sitting tightly curled up with a cat in his arms. The figurine has a lively and expressive formal language, where the child's smile, the relaxed posture and the close contact with the animal give the motif warmth and presence. It is a figurine that immediately catches the eye and creates life in the interior, both as a standalone art object and as part of a collection of Danish stoneware figurines.

The glaze plays a major role in the figurine's expression. The flowing shades in greenish, brown and dark tones settle dramatically over the surface and highlight the many details of the modelling. This gives the stoneware figurine a distinctive character and an almost organic expression, which suits the motif particularly well. One senses both the weight of the material and the artistic freedom that characterizes many of Royal Copenhagen's stoneware figurines.

According to the existing product information, the figurine was designed by Knud Kyhn. His name is often associated with strongly modelled figurines and a sure grasp of form and surface, and that is also felt here. The motif of boy and cat makes the figurine an obvious choice for collectors of child figurines, animal figurines and older Danish stoneware, but it also works beautifully in a modern home, where it can add personality, history and materiality.

Older stoneware figurines have a special ability to create depth in the interior. They are made to last, and that is precisely why it makes sense to preserve and continue to use them. A figurine like this brings both craftsmanship, storytelling and sustainability into the home, because it gets new life with a new owner. It is also an obvious gift idea for collectors or for someone who appreciates Danish design with soul and character.
