About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1898 with the motif Christmas Roses and Poinsettias is one of the early editions in the famous series, which began in 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series. Just a few years after the start of the series, this plate shows how confidently Fanny Garde managed to unite the symbolism of Christmas with an elegant, decorative visual language that still appears both poetic and timeless today.

Christmas Roses and Poinsettias unfold in a fine interplay between flowers and light. Along the rim, the stylized flowers can be seen in a calm wreath, while the center is dominated by a radiant poinsettia with soft, almost glowing points. The motif has a special tranquility about it. It is not a narrative winter landscape, but a more symbolic Christmas motif, where nature, faith and holiday merge together in the classic blue shades of the porcelain. Precisely the simple composition gives the plate a particularly refined expression.

The existing story of the Christmas rose is beautifully connected to this edition. According to legend, Christmas roses sprang forth where a little girl's tears fell on the night Jesus was born. Therefore, Christmas Roses and Poinsettias become not merely a floral decoration, but also a motif with warmth, hope and gentle Christmas piety. The poinsettia in the center emphasizes the Christian Christmas story and gives the composition a natural center that draws the eye together.

As a Christmas plate from 1898, this edition belongs among the earliest releases in the series and therefore has a particular historical interest. Each edition was produced in a limited number, and after the final firing of the year, the mold was destroyed. This makes each completed edition a final testimony to its time. For collectors and connoisseurs, the early Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates are therefore particularly interesting, both for their age and for their place at the beginning of a Danish design tradition that continued year after year.

An older Christmas plate like this adds history, personality and a form of sustainable beauty to the home that cannot be mass-produced anew. It can be hung up as part of a Christmas display, be included in a collection of early plates, or stand on display as an atmospheric piece of Danish porcelain with soul and cultural history.
