About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1926 with the motif On the way to church captures a quiet and solemn Christmas scene, where families move through the snow-covered landscape toward the church. On the plate, the dark church silhouette is seen rising above the winter road, while a bright star shines in the sky and emphasizes the special atmosphere of anticipation, faith and community that belongs to Christmas.

The year's motif is designed by Achton Friis, and precisely On the way to church tells a classic Danish Christmas story in porcelain. In the foreground, a small group walks together through the snow, and farther ahead several more figures can be glimpsed on the same road toward the church's light. This gives the motif a beautiful depth and a sense of movement, as if the entire parish is on its way to the Christmas service. To the left, the church stands solidly in the winter landscape, and the tall tree to the right creates a fine balance in the composition.

The current registration points to Haraldsted Church north of Ringsted, and that fits well with the plate's expression of Danish village church and old cultural history. Thus, this edition becomes not only a Christmas plate, but also a small atmospheric picture of Danish tradition, where nature, church and people are bound together in a calm story of Christmas's path toward the light.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plate series began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and the 1926 edition belongs among the classic releases that many collectors seek for their motif, history and place in the long tradition. Each edition was produced in a limited number, and after the year's final firing the mold was destroyed, so production could not be resumed later.

As this Christmas plate is from 1905 and onward, it can also be used as a smaller plate all year round. It is lovely for cake or a small dessert, but naturally takes on something quite special when it is brought out at Christmas time and adds the familiar blue Bing & Grøndahl atmosphere to the table. At the same time, it is a beautiful way to preserve older quality design and let porcelain with history gain new life in a modern home.
