About the item
Christmas in Copenhagen from 1977 captures the special atmosphere that only a December evening over the city's rooftops can have. On this Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, Henry Thelander has created a poetic Copenhagen motif, where the snow lies heavy on the roofs, a window stands open to the night, and an illuminated Christmas tree glows warmly from a home in the background. At the same time, Rundetårn rises as a distinctive landmark in the city's winter darkness and anchors the motif clearly in the capital.

Precisely the title Christmas in Copenhagen makes the motif especially vivid. Here it is not the big, busy metropolis that takes center stage, but the intimate and quiet Christmas experience seen from the rooftops and the illuminated windows. The small figure by the roof window creates a story of anticipation, curiosity, and the special calm that can descend over the city on Christmas Eve. The star in the sky and the light from the windows emphasize the classic Christmas symbolism of hope, warmth, and homeliness.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates hold a special place in Danish porcelain history. The series began in 1895 and was the world's first Christmas plate series, and since 1895 a new plate has been released every year. The 1977 edition is therefore part of a long and beloved tradition that both collectors and Christmas enthusiasts return to year after year. Each edition was produced in a limited number, and after the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed so that production could not be resumed later.

This Christmas plate is not only a collector's item, but also a usable porcelain plate. From 1905 onwards, Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates are suitable for food, and this edition can therefore easily be used as a cake plate or for a small dessert when you want to add a touch of classic Danish Christmas to the table setting. The rest of the year, it is also beautiful as wall decoration or as part of a collection of blue-white Christmas plates with history and soul.

An older Christmas plate like this brings tradition, design history, and sustainable joy into the home. It is porcelain created to last, be preserved, and be brought out again year after year.
