About the item
Winter Day in Dyrehaven from 1994 captures a quiet and recognizable Danish winter atmosphere, where nature, tradition and everyday life meet in Bing & Grøndahl's classic blue universe. The motif shows a peaceful winter landscape with the snow-covered building in the center, tall bare trees around the square and children in the foreground, while two riders on horseback give the scene life and movement. It is precisely this calm narrative that makes this year's Christmas plate both atmospheric and easy to relate to.
Jørgen Nielsen has created a composition in which Dyrehaven's special atmosphere clearly emerges. The bare branches form an almost protective frame around the motif, while the snow brightens up around the house and the decorated tree. Together with the small figures in the landscape, the plate achieves a fine balance between winter calm and activity. Winter Day in Dyrehaven is not only about a place, but also about the special anticipation and the sense of community associated with December and the small experiences of the Christmas season.
Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates hold a very special place in Danish porcelain history. The series began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and each edition was produced in a limited number. After the last firing of the year, the mold was destroyed, so that the edition in question could not later be put into production again. This makes each individual release a completed part of the series' long history.
This Christmas plate is therefore both a decorative collector's item and a useful piece of porcelain. From 1905 onwards, Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates have been suitable for food, and this edition can therefore also be used as a small plate all year round or brought out at Christmas time for, for example, cake or dessert. The blue decoration adds a classic Christmas atmosphere to the table, but the plate is also beautiful on its own on the wall or in a collection with other editions.
For many, older Christmas plates are more than just porcelain. They bring history, craftsmanship and Danish design tradition into the home and are at the same time a sustainable choice, when beautiful quality objects are allowed to live on and create joy in new surroundings.
