About the item
Eremitagen from 1923 is an atmospheric Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, where the winter landscape around the well-known hunting lodge in Dyrehaven is interpreted with the calm, blue-white elegance that has made the series' Christmas plates classic collectors' items. On the plate, a deer stands in the foreground on the snow-covered field, while Eremitageslottet emerges in the background. The motif unites nature, Danish cultural history, and winter stillness in one and the same composition.
It is precisely the title Eremitagen that gives the motif its special weight. The lodge by Dyrehaven north of Copenhagen has for generations been associated with hunting, landscape, and royal history, and in this edition it is not the great splendor that is at the center, but rather the quiet December atmosphere. The deer in front of the building creates a beautiful balance in the motif and emphasizes the connection between the lodge and the surrounding deer park area. At the bottom on the front appears the visible text JULE-AFTEN-1923, which clearly places the plate in the line of classic Danish Christmas plates.
This Christmas plate is designed by Achton Friis for Bing & Grøndahl. The series began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been released every year, and each edition was produced in a limited number. After the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so that the completed edition could not later be put into production again. This is an important part of the explanation for the enduring interest in the original Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates.
As older porcelain with history, this edition contains both collector's value and a special form of sustainability. Choosing a vintage Christmas plate is also preserving Danish design and giving a quality piece new life in the home. It can be hung up as part of a collection, included in a picture wall with classic Danish porcelain, or used as a smaller plate when Christmas cake or dessert is to be served with extra atmosphere. Also during the rest of the year, it adds a calm, Nordic character to the home.
