About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1928 with the motif Inuits by Greenlandic Church is an atmospheric edition, where Achton Friis combines winter landscape, human life and Nordic storytelling in the classic blue Christmas plate porcelain. The motif leads the eye toward a snow-covered Greenlandic landscape, where two people stand and sit in the foreground, while a small church lies at the foot of the prominent mountains under a starry sky.

Precisely the title Inuits by Greenlandic Church gives the motif its special gravity. The two figures are not merely part of the landscape, but bearers of the story of people's lives, faith and presence in a harsh and beautiful environment. One figure stands up and gazes out over the church and the mountains, while the other sits in the snow. Together they create a calm and contemplative scene, where nature, silence and community seem to meet.

Achton Friis was known for his ability to capture moods and places with both simplicity and character, and this is clearly felt in this Christmas plate from 1928. The steep mountains, the small church and the open winter space give the motif an almost poetic depth. It is an edition that stands out by placing the Christmas story in a Greenlandic context and thereby expanding the classic Danish Christmas plate with a motif from the northern world of the Realm.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates began in 1895 and were the world's first Christmas plate series. Since then, a new plate has been released every year, and each edition was produced in a limited quantity. After the year's final firing, the mould was destroyed, so that the individual edition remained a completed release. This is an important part of the explanation for the enduring interest in the original older Christmas plates.

As this edition is from 1928, it can also be used as a smaller plate all year round, for example for cake or dessert. In December, it naturally gets a special place, but also during the rest of the year it can add character, history and classic Danish porcelain with soul to the table. Older Christmas plates like this are at the same time a beautiful way to bring enduring craftsmanship further into modern homes.
