About the item
Pigeons at the Palace Square 1921 captures a quiet winter atmosphere in the heart of Copenhagen, where city life, architecture, and the calm of Christmas meet in a single motif. On this Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, the two pigeons are seen in the foreground on the open palace square, while the striking building in the background rises in a soft, almost misty winter light. This gives the motif a special calm, where the intimate details and the monumental architecture balance beautifully against each other.

The 1921 edition was designed by Achton Friis, and the motif Pigeons at the Palace Square brings to mind the historic surroundings of Slotsholmen. In the image, the birds stand as the living main characters, while the square and the building behind them create a dignified, almost solemn setting. One pigeon searches for food in the snow, while the other stands upright and attentive. Together they give the scene life and presence, and it is precisely the contrast between the small birds and the large building that makes this Christmas plate especially atmospheric.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates began in 1895 and were the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been released every year, and the 1921 edition is thus part of a long and tradition-rich Danish design history. Each edition was produced in a limited number, and after the final firing of the year, the mould was destroyed. Therefore, each Christmas plate stands as a completed release with its own motif, its own year, and its own place in the series.

The classic blue-and-white porcelain decoration makes this vintage Christmas plate easy to combine with both other Bing & Grøndahl plates and a more contemporary interior. It can be hung up as part of a collection or used as a smaller plate all year round. During the Christmas season, it is also ideal for cake or dessert, where the characteristic winter motif adds a discreet and tradition-rich Christmas atmosphere to the table.

Choosing an older Christmas plate like this is also a beautiful way to bring quality, history, and sustainability into the home. Porcelain with age and soul is created to be preserved, used, and bring joy through generations.
