About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1971 with the motif Christmas in the home captures one of the most recognizable and warm Christmas traditions in Danish culture: the family gathered around the Christmas tree, while singing and playing. Henry Thelander has created an atmospheric motif, where the security of the home and the calm of Christmas Eve stand out clearly in the classic blue-and-white porcelain, which has made Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates loved through generations.
In this edition, one sees a woman sitting at the piano with a small child on her lap, while she accompanies the family's Christmas song. In the middle of the room stands the Christmas tree with a star at the top and living candles, and around it the family members can be glimpsed in a quiet circle. The composition gives the motif an almost intimate character, where the music, the light, and the togetherness bring the whole scene together. Christmas in the home in particular tells not of the great outer world, but of the close and meaningful moment that many associate with the true Christmas.
Bing & Grøndahl's series of Christmas plates began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and the 1971 edition is part of this long and tradition-rich story. Each edition was produced in a limited number, and after the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so that the edition in question could not later be put into production again. This makes each plate a completed edition with its own place in the series.
This Christmas plate is ideal as a wall hanging in December, but because Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates from 1905 onwards can also be used for food, it can also come to life on the table for the rest of the year. It is, for example, well suited as a cake plate or for a small dessert, and at Christmas time it adds a special historical atmosphere to the table setting.
Older porcelain with a history has a special ability to create personality in the home. Choosing a vintage Christmas plate is also a beautiful way to give classic Danish craftsmanship new life and let quality, tradition, and storytelling live on in new generations.
