About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1968 with the motif Christmas Eve in Church captures one of the most recognizable Danish Christmas traditions: the atmospheric church service on 24 December, before the evening's celebration begins at home. Henry Thelander has created an edition in which the church interior, the light and the congregation together tell of calm, anticipation and community during Christmastime.

On the plate, the church interior is seen filled with people in the pews, while decorations with fir and candles lead the eye toward the altar area. To the right stands a beautifully illuminated Christmas tree with a star at the top, and above the congregation the hanging church ship can be seen, which is a familiar feature in many Danish churches. Together with the high vaults, the pulpit and the soft lighting effects, it gives the motif a solemn and almost quiet resonance. At the bottom on the front appears the visible text Jul. Aften. 1968, which closely connects the edition to the special atmosphere of Christmas Eve itself.

This Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate is part of the famous series, which began in 1895 and thus became the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and the 1968 edition continues in the most beautiful way the Danish tradition of collecting memories, history and Christmas spirit in porcelain. Each edition was produced in a limited number, and after the year's final firing the mold was destroyed, so the completed edition could not later be put into production again.

As an older original Christmas plate, this edition contains both history, collector interest and the joy of preserving classic Danish porcelain. It adds personality to the home, whether it is hung up as part of a Christmas wall with other annual plates or brought out in December as a fixed part of Christmas traditions. As Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates from 1905 onward can also be used for food, this 1968 plate can, for example, be used as a cake plate at Christmastime or during the rest of the year, when you want a little extra blue-white nostalgia on the table.

Christmas Eve in Church is therefore not only a Christmas plate, but also a fine story about Danish Christmas celebration, faith and tradition, preserved in the classic Bing & Grøndahl expression.
