About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1959 with the title Christmas Atmosphere captures one of the most recognizable moments in Danish Christmas tradition: the warm light and togetherness inside, seen from the cold winter night outside. The motif creates a fine contrast between the snow at the door and the lively, safe atmosphere in the house, where Christmas Eve unfolds behind the window panes.
In this edition, created by Kjeld Bonfils, you look in through a door with glazing bars and shutters, flanked by bare trees and a snow-covered front area. A cat sits outside on the fence and looks in, while the family's silhouettes can be seen around the illuminated Christmas tree. The small points of light in the window and the moving figures make Christmas Atmosphere more than a winter motif; it tells of anticipation, closeness, and the special calm that comes with Christmas Eve. At the bottom of the plate appears the visible text Christmas Eve 1959, which links the motif directly to the holiday and the year's release.
Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates hold a very special place in Danish design and collector history. The series began in 1895 and was the world's first Christmas plate series, and since 1895 a new plate has been released every year. Each edition was produced in a closed production, and after the year's final firing the mold was destroyed. This makes each individual release an independent part of the series' long story.
This Christmas plate is therefore both an atmospheric collector's item and a piece of Danish porcelain history. At the same time, editions from 1905 onwards are suitable for use at the table, so the 1959 plate can also be brought out as a small dessert plate at Christmas time or used during the rest of the year, when you want to add a little classic blue-and-white tradition to the serving.
As an older original Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, it also contains the special charm that only design with history can provide. It is precisely the type of porcelain that brings personality into the home and carries on the joy of good craftsmanship through generations.
