About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1958 with the motif Santa Claus captures a moment that many associate with the Danish Christmas Eve: the anticipation just before the door is opened, and Santa Claus is standing outside with his sack over his shoulder. In this edition, Kjeld Bonfils has created a story that is both simple and powerful. The little girl stands in the doorway, while the light from inside falls out into the winter darkness and meets the waiting figure in the snow.
The motif is full of atmosphere. Icicles hang from the roof, the snow lies heavily around the house, and in the background a wintry landscape with church and buildings can be glimpsed. From inside the home, a lit Christmas tree can be seen, which emphasizes the contrast between the cold outside and the warmth inside. That is precisely why Santa Claus works so well as a title: this year's plate is not only about a figure, but about the whole anticipation, the surprise, and the secure Christmas tradition that brings the family together.
At the bottom of the front appears the text Christmas Eve 1958, which clearly anchors the motif in this particular edition. As part of Bing & Grøndahl's famous Christmas plate series, this plate also carries a special design history with it. The series began in 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been released every year, and each edition was produced in a limited quantity. After the year's final firing, the mould was destroyed, so that production could not later be resumed.
For collectors, 1958 is therefore a completed edition with its own story, its own motif, and its own place in the series. At the same time, it is a decorative plate that still fits beautifully into the home today. The classic blue colour scale makes it ideal as part of a wall-hung collection, but it can also be used year-round as a smaller plate for cake or dessert. At Christmas time, it is especially lovely to bring out for serving, where the motif adds tradition and nostalgia to the table.
Choosing an older Christmas plate is also a way to give Danish design and fine craftsmanship new life. It is porcelain with history, created to last and to be brought out year after year, when the December atmosphere is to have a touch of classic Bing & Grøndahl.
