About the item
Søllerød Church 1986 brings forth a quiet and solemn Christmas atmosphere in the classic blue-and-white porcelain that has made Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates beloved through generations. In this edition, Edvard Jensen has chosen a motif that brings together Danish church history, winter calm, and the special anticipation associated with Christmas Eve.

In the middle of the plate stands the church gate as a natural center of the motif. The light tracks in the snow lead the eye toward the opening and give life to the scene, as if the churchgoers have just gone inside for the Christmas service. Around the gate are snow-covered bushes and trees, and in the background buildings and the dark winter evening can be discerned, broken only by the bright Christmas star above the church. It is a motif with both depth and narrative, where the stillness can almost be felt.

That the motif is specifically Søllerød Church makes this edition particularly interesting. The church dates back to around the year 1100 and thus carries a long Danish cultural history. On the Christmas plate it is not only depicted as a building, but as a symbol of tradition, gathering, and the peace many associate with Christmas. The text CHRISTMAS EVE 1986 is included as a beautiful part of the decoration and anchors the plate in this particular edition.

Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plate series began in 1895 and was the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been released every year, and each edition was produced in a limited quantity. After the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so that the completed edition could not later be put into production again. This is part of the explanation for why these plates continue to be of great interest among collectors and at the same time bring joy as historical design objects with lasting value.

This Christmas plate is also ideal for use in the home today. From 1905 onward, Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates are suitable for food, so the 1986 edition can easily be used as a cake plate or for a small dessert at Christmas time. During the rest of the year, it is beautiful as wall decoration or as part of a collection, where older porcelain with history is given new life in a modern interior.
