About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1901 with the title Wise Men from the East is an early and atmospheric year from the famous Danish series, which began in 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series. Already in the motif one senses the special solemn calm that characterizes the oldest plates: three dark figures stand facing the horizon, while the bright star shines above them and leads the gaze forward.
Wise Men from the East is linked to the story from the Gospel of Matthew about the three wise men, who follow the star to find the newborn baby Jesus. On the plate, the scene is interpreted with great simplicity and strength. The three cloaked figures are seen from behind in a quiet landscape, where a low city silhouette or settlement appears in the distance. One figure points toward the star, and this very movement gives the motif both direction and narrative. It is an image of search, faith and hope - themes that suit the message of Christmas beautifully.
The 1901 year was created just a few years after the beginning of the series, and that makes it particularly interesting for collectors of early Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates. Designer S. Sabra has here created a motif where the classic blue color scale emphasizes the depth of the night and the quiet, almost devotional atmosphere. The early years have a special historical presence, because they are so close to the beginning of the series and show how the Christmas plate was early on used to convey both tradition, narrative and artistic craftsmanship.
Each year was produced in a limited number, and after the year's final firing the mold was destroyed. Therefore, the 1901 edition stands as a completed year, which could not later be put into production again. Precisely with older plates like this, it is part of the charm that one preserves a piece of Danish porcelain history and passes on a quality object with more than 100 years of history to the next generation.
This Christmas plate also has two holes on the back for hanging, so it is created to have a visible place in the home, where the motif can be allowed to tell its story during Christmas time and the rest of the year.
