About the product
1992 Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate, designed by Svend Vestergaard, has the title The Royal Coach. Royal Copenhagen's Christmas plate from 1992 depicts King Christian VIII's coach driving past Christiansborg palace. As far back as the 12th and 13th centuries Denmark has been renowned for her impressive horses. By the 1500s Denmark had also built a fine reputation for her magnificent and lavishly adorned coaches. The prestigious reputation led to the establishment of the Royal Stables which have been home to the Royal horses and coaches since 1690. The coach in this year's plate motif is the distinguished gilt coach. The coach of Christian VIII which in 1840 was created by coach builder Henry Fife. Crown Prince Frederik ( the 8th) and Crown Princess Louise used this coach for their entry into Copenhagen in 1869. The coach was repaired in 1954 and is today used by Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik on official occasions and also at the New Year levee. Another fascinating feature of this year's Christmas plate is that Christian VIII, whose coach is seen, was the last absolute monarch in Denmark, as the present con- stitution was introduced in 1848, and be- hind the coach you see Christiansborg palace, the place in which the present Danish Parliament, democratically elected, is seated.
