Royal Copenhagen hippopotamus stoneware figurine no. 20182 Knud Kyhn

Royal Copenhagen hippopotamus no. 20182 is a striking stoneware figurine by Knud Kyhn, in which the powerful animal is depicted with a calm, compact posture and a vivid, present expression. The figurine has the distinctive weight and character that make Kyhn's animal figurines sought after among collectors of Danish ceramics, stoneware and classic Royal Copenhagen design.

The hippopotamus is modelled with a great sense of the animal's massive form, from the broad back and the short, solid legs to the rounded lines of the head and the small upright ears. The glaze appears in shades of brown, beige and dark, organic markings, which give the surface depth and an almost landscape-like play. This emphasises the figurine's tactile quality and makes it interesting to experience from all angles.

Knud Kyhn is known for his lifelike and characterful animal figurines, and here in particular one senses his sure eye for both anatomy and personality. The figurine works beautifully as an independent decorative element in the home interior, where it adds warmth, history and materiality to both modern and more classic homes. It is also an obvious choice for the collector seeking Royal Copenhagen figurines with a clear identity and strong design.

Older design objects like this hippopotamus have a special value because they were created with durability and lasting enjoyment in mind. When you choose original stoneware with history, you get not just a figurine, but also a piece of Danish design culture that can still find a natural place in the home for many years to come.

The figurine is signed KK as well as with Royal Copenhagen's three blue waves, which helps to emphasise its origin and collector interest.
