Royal Copenhagen Young couple figurine no. 4649 porcelain figurine

Royal Copenhagen figurine no. 4649, "Young couple", is a porcelain figurine with an unusually vivid and present expression. The motif shows a young couple in a relaxed, almost playful position, where they are closely connected in both posture and mood. The figurine has a fine narrative about youth, familiarity and the quiet togetherness, which makes it ideal for collectors of human figurines and classic Danish porcelain.

John Galster has created a composition with soft lines and a natural physicality, which gives the figurine movement from all angles. The girl sits upright in a blue top and light trousers, while the other figure lies reclined against her in subdued grey and blue shades. The close placement, the bare feet and the relaxed posture give the figurine a modern and human expression, which stands out among more formal porcelain figurines.

As a Royal Copenhagen porcelain figurine, "Young couple" is a beautiful example of how underglaze decoration and modelling come together in a higher unity. The calm colours support the intimate character of the motif, and the glazed surfaces highlight folds in the clothing and the fine transitions in the figures' faces, hands and feet. It is precisely this combination of artistic design and classic porcelain craftsmanship that makes the figurine interesting both as decoration and as a collector's item.

The figurine fits well in an interior where one wants craftsmanship with personality and narrative. It can stand alone on a shelf, in a display cabinet or together with other Royal Copenhagen figurines, where it adds a more informal and human motif. For you, who are fond of older porcelain with soul, it is also a fine way to bring Danish design history further into a contemporary home.
