About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas anniversary plate 2015 marks the 120th anniversary of the world's first Christmas plate from 1895 and at the same time beautifully continues the history of the series. Here the classic motif Copenhagen's Towers is resumed, which according to the existing description is linked to both 1895 and 1995. This makes this very anniversary edition particularly interesting for collectors and for those who appreciate Danish porcelain with historical depth.
The motif shows Copenhagen's characteristic skyline bathed in the blue underglaze for which Bing & Grøndahl is known. Several towers and domes rise above the city, with the prominent bell tower centrally placed in the image and a clear star in the sky. In front of the city's silhouette a wintry landscape with snow-covered trees can be seen, while decorative, frost-like forms in the foreground frame the scene and add an almost fairy-tale Christmas atmosphere to the motif. At the bottom of the plate stands the visible text 1895·JULE·AFTEN·2015, which emphasizes the connection between the first Christmas plate and the anniversary year.
Copenhagen's Towers contains both urban history and Christmas poetry. The combination of the recognizable city profile, the quiet winter night and the bright star gives the motif a calm and solemn atmosphere, where the big city and Christmas meet. It is easy to understand why this very motif has been chosen for an anniversary edition in the series, which since 1915 has reissued selected earlier Christmas plate motifs in a larger format every five years.
With its 23 cm, the anniversary plate is larger than the ordinary Christmas plates and therefore functions not only as wall decoration, but also nicely as a plate. It can be used for Christmas lunch, lunch serving or a smaller dinner, where the classic blue-and-white porcelain gives the table setting personality. At the same time, it is a beautiful way to preserve older design traditions and let porcelain with history gain new life in a modern home.
Jørgen Nielsen is behind this edition, which concludes a long and tradition-rich series of 5-year Christmas anniversary plates. For many, 2015 will also be a special year to choose for a collection or a display with porcelain, where the year itself has personal significance.
