About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas anniversary plate 1945 marks the 50th anniversary of the world's first Christmas plate from 1895, and precisely for that reason this anniversary edition holds a special place in the series. The motif The Royal Guard outside Amalienborg was originally used on Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plate from 1936 and was reissued in 1945 in a larger format as part of the sought-after 5-year Christmas anniversary plates.
On the plate one encounters a quiet winter evening in Copenhagen, where a guardsman stands in front of the snow-covered building, while the characteristic dome of the Marble Church rises in the background. The combination of the upright guard, the classical architecture and the calm snow creates an atmosphere of both festivity, tradition and Danish history. At the bottom on the front appears the visible text 1895 JULE AFTEN 1945, which ties the anniversary plate directly to the beginning of the series.
The motif is designed by Ove Larsen and is executed in Bing & Grøndahl's well-known blue underglaze, which gives depth to both the details of the buildings and the winter light in the scene. The larger size means that the motif gains more calm and presence than on the ordinary Christmas plates, and that is precisely part of the charm of the anniversary editions. Here one gets both the story of an important milestone in the history of the Christmas plate and a classic Copenhagen motif that still appears timeless.
This year is ideal for the collector who is looking for a particular anniversary plate, but it also works beautifully as wall decoration in the home. The two holes on the back make it easy to hang up, and it can also be used as a plate all year round. With its diameter of 23 cm it is well suited for lunch, Christmas servings or serving, where one would like to add a touch of classic Danish porcelain history to the table.
As an older Bing & Grøndahl plate, it also contains some of what many appreciate about vintage porcelain: quality, history and the joy of letting beautiful craftsmanship live on in a modern home. That makes it a meaningful gift idea for a year with personal significance or as part of a collection focused on Danish design and Christmas traditions.
