About the item
The Watermill from 1945 is an atmospheric Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, where winter calm and Danish cultural history merge in the classic blue-and-white porcelain. The motif shows the old watermill surrounded by snow, dark tree trunks and bare branches, while the mill wheel rests heavy and prominent beside the building. It is a vintage that conveys both stillness, durability and respect for the work around which earlier generations built their everyday lives.

The title The Watermill fits the motif's simple narrative precisely. There are no superfluous details here, but a strong depiction of the mill as a natural focal point in the landscape. The low winter light, the frozen atmosphere and the calm water in front of the building give the plate an almost contemplative character. The Watermill stands as a symbol of a time when the forces of nature were utilized with care, and when craftsmanship, operation and village life were closely connected.

This Christmas plate is from 1945 and is part of Bing & Grøndahl's tradition-rich series, which began in 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and this is precisely what makes each vintage a small piece of design and cultural history. The fact that the 1945 vintage bears the title The Watermill also gives it a particular historical depth, because the motif points back to older Danish environments and buildings, which today evoke both nostalgia and collectors' delight.

The design is attributed to Ove Larsen, and the motif has the characteristic balance that makes Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates so beloved: a decorative winter motif, a clear narrative and a form that is suitable both for hanging and use. As this vintage is from 1905 or later, it can also be used as a smaller plate, for example for cake in December or the rest of the year, if you wish to bring historical porcelain into the table setting.

For collectors, it is worth noting that each vintage was produced in a limited number, and that the mold was destroyed after the year's final firing. This means that the 1945 edition is a completed vintage, which could not later be put back into production. At the same time, older Christmas plates are a beautiful way to choose reuse with history, quality and soul over new production.
