About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1940 with the title Postman with the Christmas Mail captures a very special December atmosphere, where the winter darkness is lit up by snow, stars, and the awaited greeting at the door. The motif shows a postman who, in the snow, steps up to the house to hand the Christmas mail to the recipient in the doorway. The small scene tells, with simple means, of closeness, anticipation, and the great significance that Christmas cards and letters had in a time when greetings were carried forward from hand to hand.

The year 1940 gives the motif an extra reflection. In the midst of an unsettled time, Postman with the Christmas Mail gains a strong human warmth, where the connection between family, friends, and acquaintances stands at the center. On the plate are seen the snow-covered roofs, the lit lantern, and the footprints in the snow, which emphasize the feeling of a quiet winter evening, where the Christmas message arrives. It is precisely this narrative quality that makes many of Bing & Grøndahl's older Christmas plates so relevant to this day.

The plate is designed by Ove Larsen and executed in the classic blue-and-white porcelain, which has made the series famous among collectors. Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plate series began in 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series, and since then a new plate has been issued every year. Each year was produced in a limited quantity, and after the year's final firing the mold was destroyed, so that the completed edition could not later be put into production again. This is part of the explanation for the enduring interest in the individual years.

As a vintage Christmas plate, this 1940 edition contains both history, Danish design tradition, and sustainable value. Choosing older porcelain is also to preserve fine craftsmanship and give beautiful objects with soul a place in the home again. It can be hung up as part of a collection, included in the Christmas decoration, or used year-round as a smaller plate for cake or dessert. In December, it is also ideal to bring out when the table is to have a classic Danish Christmas touch.
