1939 Bing & grondahl Christmas plate, designed by Immanuel Tjerne, bears the title The Sandman. Bing & Grondahl's Christmas plate from 1939 depicts a nursery with a decorated Christmas tree, and Ole Lukoie with his umbrella leaning over the bed, where the child is sleeping. Ole Lukoie ( the sandman) is the tale of a popular fairy tale figure who, with his umbrella, can put children to sleep, and make them have pleasant dreams. As early as 1724 Ole lukoie was mentioned in a play by J.R.Pauli, but now we all know him because of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale of the same name.
