About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1941 with the motif Horses in the Stable enjoy the Christmas Meal captures a warm and quiet Christmas scene from rural life. Two horses stand calmly in the stable with their heads bent toward the feed, while small birds gather in front of the opening and around the window. It is a motif that unites winter, care and Christmas peace in the classic blue-and-white porcelain style that has made Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates beloved by collectors through generations.

The title Horses in the Stable enjoy the Christmas Meal fits beautifully with the motif that unfolds on the plate. Here one does not sense the busy Christmas, but the more reflective side of the holiday, where the animals also share in the care. The small star in the window emphasizes the Christmas atmosphere, and the interplay between the horses, the birds and the stable space gives the motif a gentle story about winter, closeness and traditions in the countryside.

The year edition was designed by Ove Larsen and is a fine example of how Bing & Grøndahl managed to turn everyday motifs into atmospheric Christmas stories. The series began as early as 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, giving each year its own place in the long Danish porcelain history.

This Christmas plate from 1941 is at the same time a closed year edition from a series where production was limited to the individual year. After the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so the motif could not later be put into production again. This is part of the explanation for why the original Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plates still hold great interest among collectors and among those who appreciate older porcelain with history and soul.

As the Christmas plates from 1905 onwards may be used for food, this year edition can also be used as a small dessert or cake plate. For the rest of the year, it can hang on the wall as a decorative reminder of Danish Christmas atmosphere, and in December it gets a very special place in the home. Choosing an older Christmas plate is at the same time a beautiful way to give classic craftsmanship new life in a modern interior.
