About the item
Christmas Welcome from 1976 is an atmospheric Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate, in which Henry Thelander depicts a moment filled with warmth, anticipation, and Danish Christmas tradition. The motif brings together harbour, village, and church in one narrative: a boat has docked at the quay, and on land figures can be seen moving toward one another in a welcome that gives the plate its special sense of presence.

It is precisely this narrative that makes Christmas Welcome so memorable. In front of the old houses and the prominent church in the background, a scene unfolds that emanates homecoming and community. The boat rests calmly in the foreground, while the people on the quay create life and movement. The blue-and-white porcelain beautifully highlights the winter light and gives the motif the classic, tranquil Christmas atmosphere that many associate with Bing & Grøndahl's Christmas plates.

The 1976 edition belongs to the famous series that began in 1895 as the world's first Christmas plate series. Since 1895, a new plate has been issued every year, and each edition is thus its own complete narrative. Production was limited, and after the last firing of the year, the mould was destroyed, so that the edition in question could not later be put into production again. This is part of the explanation for why these plates continue to attract great interest among collectors of Danish Christmas porcelain.

At the same time, a Christmas plate from 1976 is more than a collector's item. It can also be used year-round as a smaller plate, for example for cake or dessert, and in December it quite naturally takes on a special place at the Christmas table. Here, Christmas Welcome adds both history, nostalgia, and classic Danish design to the table setting.

For those of you who appreciate older quality design, this plate is also a fine example of how porcelain with a history can gain new life in a modern home. It is beautiful as wall decoration, in a collection of Christmas plates, or as a personal gift for someone who appreciates Bing & Grøndahl, Danish design, and the stories of Christmas.
