Bing & Groendahl Christmas Anniversary Plates from 1915 to 2015
Bing & Groendahl released the first Christmas anniversary plate in 1915, 20 years after the factory in 1895 had issued the world's first Christmas plate. Afterwards, a new anniversary plate was released every five years up to 2015.
For the anniversary plates, Bing & Groendahl chose motifs from previous Christmas plates and presented them in a larger format. This means many of the familiar motifs have a bit more space, and several details become clearer.
Famous motifs in a larger format
The regular Bing & Groendahl Christmas plates measure 18 cm in diameter, while the Christmas anniversary plates measure 23 cm. On the larger plate, the motif simply has more space, which often allows more of the small details to be noticed.
This can be seen, for example, on the 1955 anniversary plate, which has the same motif as the 1947 Christmas plate featuring Dybbøl Mill. On the anniversary plate, we get a closer look, and the surrounding buildings become easier to see. Here, we get a better view of the miller's house and the grain storehouse.
Use the Christmas anniversary plates on the table
The Christmas anniversary plates are perfectly suited as plates, both for lunch, cake, and smaller dinner dishes. They are slightly deeper than a regular flat plate and therefore also work well for dishes such as pasta and rice pudding.
Like the classic Bing & Groendahl Christmas plates, the anniversary plates are made with underglaze. This means the decoration is protected under the glaze, and the plates can withstand dishwasher use, making them easy to use as plates.
Use them as a base in a cake stand
The Christmas anniversary plates are also well suited as the bottom plate in a cake stand, where they can be combined with a smaller plate or dish on top.
Here you can choose by motif or year and, for example, use a plate from a birth year, wedding year, or another year that holds special meaning.
Decorate with Christmas anniversary plates
The Christmas anniversary plates do not only have to be brought out when the table is set. They can also be used as part of the decor, either hung on the wall or standing in a plate stand on a bookshelf, sideboard, or shelf.
On the wall, you can hang a single plate or collect several different years. In a plate stand, they are easy to move around and can stand alongside glassware, vases, figures, books, or other items you already have on display.
They can also be combined with the smaller Bing & Groendahl Christmas plates if you want to mix different sizes and motifs.
100 years of Christmas anniversary plates
The first Christmas anniversary plate was released in 1915, and the last was issued in 2015. The series thus spans 100 years and follows the Christmas plate tradition Bing & Groendahl started with the first Christmas plate in 1895.
Many collectors gather the anniversary plates as a series of their own, while others choose individual years. It can be a particular motif, a year with special significance, or a plate that fits well with the other Bing & Groendahl Christmas plates.
