Royal Copenhagen's Christmas plate from 1974 depicts a winter landscape in twilight, with an owl, a night animal, sitting on a branch in the foreground of the plate, and in the background, the full moon is shining. Anybody living through the Nordic winter will reconize the mood expressed in Shelley's Ode to the West Wind " If Winter comes, can Spring be far behind". In his motif Kaj Lange conveys not only the restful stillnes when Nature seems to sleep and only few animals can survive, but also a beauty of the season which holds the promise that the cold twilight of winter will eventually turn into the light and warmth of spring.
