When can you start decorating for Christmas? DPH gives its answer

The experts have spoken: You become happier by decorating early for Christmas!

Yes, you read that right. - Several psychologists have stated that it is actually a good idea to start decorating early for Christmas.

This is because you move away from your normal routines and everyday life, which helps create a neurological shift. This shift sends a signal to your senses, which then assesses whether the change is pleasant or not.

In many cases, this assessment will be positive because the Christmas decorations, including recognizable decorations from Christmas collections from Holmegaard, Georg Jensen, Rosendahl Karen Blixens Christmas, Royal Copenhagen and Bing & Groendahl, can evoke memories of previous Christmas coziness and joy.

Simply put, the Christmas decorations can take you back to a time without stress and worries, which makes you happy. But with that comes the next question...

So when is early enough?

Many Danes start decorating in November, others already in October, and then there are those who believe that Christmas decorations only belong in December. Yes, as already mentioned, there are plenty of opinions in this area! - But here we believe the most important thing is what YOU feel like. After all, it is your home.

We ourselves are advocates for starting to decorate in November. Why, you may ask? There are actually many reasons for that. The most important is that we simply feel that we get more joy from our Christmas decorations over a longer period. We simply think December is too short a period and the decorations almost have to come down again before we have put everything up. - And that is a shame!

5 good tips for decorating for Christmas

1. Clean properly before you decorate

A messy home and Christmas decorations don't go very well hand in hand. Therefore, it can be a good idea to clean up your home before adding the extra elements and decorations in the Christmas month, so your home doesn't end up as a green and red chaos.

Start by doing a thorough cleaning... - The cute elves should be skiing down artificial snow, not dust! And be thorough, reach all corners, and while you're at it, you might as well polish the chandelier so it can shine beautifully as if it were the star over Bethlehem.

Also, don't be afraid to move everyday decorative items away and rearrange a bit so you can make room for the Christmas decorations. - After all, they come back again in January and you avoid ending up with a messy home during the Christmas months. It can quickly look like the Christmas decorations were just thrown in without any thought, as they belong to Christmas, but you can avoid that by making it the primary decorative item in the home.

2. Choose colors that match your home's interior

Achieve a more harmonious coherence between the decorations and the style in your home by using colors and materials that match your current interior.

Ask yourself: What type of interior do I have at home? Use the answer as a starting point for your Christmas decorations. After all, there are many styles even when it comes to Christmas decorations. Kitsch Christmas, country Christmas, retro Christmas, classic Christmas, and so on.

3. Keep it simple and give the Christmas decorations space

A whole lot of different Christmas decorations can indeed look messy, while simplicity often gives the best result.

Collect the Christmas decorations in small Christmas environments. For example, put the Christmas balls in a large glass vase. Or you can gather several elves, Santa figures, and angel figures on a mirror tray and make a small Christmas display.

You can also group your Christmas decorations on, for example, a sideboard, a coffee table, or a windowsill. Even if the decorative items are different and don't match, they can actually look quite nice when placed close together in a small group.

4. Mix old and new

It is also important that you are not afraid to mix old and new Christmas decorations. Almost all Danes have a few storage boxes somewhere with old Christmas decorations, and when you mix old with new, you create a more personal home that also appears creative. - Therefore, it can actually also be worth taking a trip to a thrift store and buying used!

Furthermore, you can consider grouping the decorations in small clusters and have them standing, for example, in windowsills or on a piece of furniture. This gives a really nice and charming expression.

You can also advantageously experiment with using beautiful Christmas plates for your table setting. - You are allowed to eat from most of the blue Christmas plates, such as those from Bing & Groendahl, Royal Copenhagen, Desiree and Rörstrand.

5. Remember the coziness!

When it comes to Christmas decorations, it is important to remember that it is not just about aesthetics, but also about the cozy atmosphere it creates. - Because Christmas is the time for coziness!

Light candles or LED lights, make a cup of warm mulled wine or cocoa in your favorite coffee set, and let the Christmas music fill the room. Invite your loved ones to help decorate. It can be a wonderful family moment where you together create Christmas magic in your home!

So remember, Christmas is about more than just decorating. It's about coming together, spreading joy, and enjoying the most wonderful time of the year.

We hope these five tips will help you create the perfect Christmas atmosphere at home. Merry Christmas from DPH – Danish Porcelain House!
