Bing & Grøndahl The Emperor and the Nightingale figurine no. 8049

Bing & Grøndahl figurine "The Emperor and the Nightingale" no. 8049 brings one of H.C. Andersen's best-known fairy tales into the interior as an atmospheric porcelain figurine with a clear narrative and strong scenic effect. The figurine shows the emperor seated on his throne with crown, cloak and ermine-trimmed robe, while a standing court figure behind him raises his hands in a distinctive, theatrical pose. On the emperor's lap and at the foot of the figurine, the little nightingale can be seen, gathering the whole story into a fine and recognizable detail.

It is precisely the meeting between fairy tale, theatre and porcelain art that makes this figurine special. The clear colors in red, green, white, black and gold emphasize the oriental-inspired expression, while the glossy overglaze gives the surface life and depth. The oval base and the modelled folds in the garments give the figurine calm and weight, while at the same time the motif retains its narrative movement.

According to the available information, the figurine is executed by Bing & Grøndahl in overglaze and linked to Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Nightingale". The designers are stated as Jens Jakob Bregnø and Hans Tegner. This makes the figurine interesting both for collectors of Bing & Grøndahl figurines, for those who are fond of H.C. Andersen motifs, and for anyone seeking a porcelain figurine with literary and decorative character.

As an older porcelain figurine, it also holds the special joy that lies in preserving classic Danish design and good craftsmanship. A figurine with history adds personality to the home and is at the same time a sustainable choice, because beautiful quality objects are allowed to live on and create value in new surroundings. It fits beautifully in a display cabinet, on a shelf, or as part of a collection with fairy tale figurines, theatre figurines or other classic porcelain figurines.
