The Little Gentleman, Bing & Groendahl, no. 544 or 2544

Bing & Groendahl The Little Gentleman no. 2544 (Royal Copenhagen no. 544) is a porcelain figurine from the series The Make Believe World of Children. The figurine depicts a young boy in costume wearing a large blue hat, a long brown coat and a long blue polka-dot tie.

The figurine was created by American sculptor Carl Lomoupo, who designed the entire series. According to the original packaging, Lomoupo was born in 1942 in Passaic, New Jersey, and was a self-taught sculptor. He received, among other distinctions, an award for best new sculptor at the Washington Heights Art Show and first prize at the New Jersey Art Show.

The series is made of porcelain and hand-decorated using Bing & Groendahl's traditional underglaze technique. A particularly interesting detail is the naturalistic skin colour of the figurines, which, according to the original Bing & Groendahl packaging, was achieved using 24-carat gold.

The Make Believe World of Children consists of several different figurines depicting children in imaginative roles and costumes. The Little Gentleman can therefore be displayed on its own as a decorative porcelain figurine or together with other figurines from the series.
