Royal Copenhagen elephant figurine no. 20198 in stoneware by Knud Kyhn

Royal Copenhagen elephant figurine no. 20198 is a characterful stoneware figurine by Knud Kyhn, where the calm and powerful expression is captured with great assurance. The figurine shows a standing elephant with lowered trunk, broad ears and a compact, heavy body shape, which gives it a calm presence on the shelf, in the display cabinet or as a striking detail in the interior. It is precisely the simple, strong form that makes this elephant figurine so sought-after among collectors of Danish ceramics and Royal Copenhagen stoneware.

The glaze plays a major role in the figurine's expression. Here, a lively, nuanced surface is seen in light cream-coloured, green and brownish tones, which emphasize the elephant's folds, legs, ears and trunk. The darker areas highlight the modelling and give the figurine depth, while the whole retains the earthy and organic expression for which Knud Kyhn's animal figurines are known. The combination of the naturalistic motif and the artistic glaze makes the figurine decorative from several angles.

Knud Kyhn worked for Royal Copenhagen and is especially known for his animal figurines in stoneware, where he gave the motifs both weight and personality. This elephant is a fine example of precisely that: a figurine that contains both Danish design history and a warm, lively handcrafted character. For collectors, figurine number 20198 is an important identification, and for the interior it is a figurine that adds calm, character and history.

Older figurines like this also have a special value in a modern home. When you choose original stoneware with history, you get not just a decorative object, but also a piece of Danish design that is created to last and be appreciated for many years to come. It stands beautifully on its own, but can also be combined with other animal figurines, ceramics or classic design objects for a personal and cohesive expression.
