Royal Copenhagen hippopotamus figurine no. 20239 by Knud Kyhn

Royal Copenhagen hippopotamus figurine no. 20239 by Knud Kyhn is a distinctive stoneware figurine full of character. The hippopotamus is modelled with an open mouth, short sturdy legs and a compact body, giving the figurine a calm, heavy and lifelike expression. The glaze plays beautifully in light and dark brownish shades, which emphasize the surface and highlight folds, paws and the distinctive shape of the head.

Knud Kyhn is known for his animal figurines, and here one clearly senses his sure eye for the animal's physique and personality. The figurine contains both weight and movement, and the wide open mouth gives the motif a more dramatic and expressive character than many other animal figurines. This makes it an obvious choice for collectors of Royal Copenhagen stoneware and for those who appreciate Danish design with a more raw and earthy formal language.

A stoneware figurine like this works beautifully on its own on a shelf, in a display cabinet or as a characterful detail on a desk or side table. It can also be combined with other animal figurines in ceramics and porcelain, where its strong silhouette and lively glaze add variation and personality. Older design objects like this carry history with them and are at the same time a beautiful choice for those who appreciate good craftsmanship and the joy of giving classic applied art and collectible design new life in the interior.
