About the item
Bing & Grøndahl Christmas plate 1988 with the motif H.C. Andersen statue in KBH combines Danish Christmas tradition, cultural history and classic porcelain design in one and the same release. In this edition, Edvard Jensen has chosen a motif that immediately evokes recognition: H.C. Andersen seated on his pedestal in a quiet, winter-clad Copenhagen, where trees, bushes and the dark December evening form a poetic setting around the scene.

The motif has a calmness and narrative depth that particularly suit H.C. Andersen. The statue is rendered with fine details, and around the pedestal small birds can be seen, bringing life to the snow-muted atmosphere. Above the landscape shines a single star, which emphasizes the feeling of Christmas Eve and gives the plate an almost fairy-tale-like expression. At the bottom on the front appears the text JULEAFTEN 1988, which clearly anchors this edition in the series' long history.

The existing title H.C. Andersen statue in KBH fits the motif beautifully, where the well-known poet is placed in the midst of the city's winter silence. The connection between H.C. Andersen and Christmas feels particularly natural, because for many his name is inseparably linked with Danish stories, nostalgia and the atmosphere that also characterizes Bing & Grøndahl's classic Christmas plates. The series began as early as 1895 and was thus the world's first Christmas plate series. Since then, a new plate has been released every year, making each edition a small piece of Danish design and Christmas history.

The Christmas plate from 1988 is made of porcelain by Bing & Grøndahl, and like the other editions it was only produced during a limited period. After the year's final firing, the mold was destroyed, so this particular edition could not later be put into production again. This is an important part of the explanation for why the individual editions continue to hold interest among collectors.

At the same time, a Christmas plate from 1988 is more than a collector's item. It can be hung up as part of the Christmas decorations, but it can also be used during the rest of the year as a smaller plate for cake or dessert. In December, it is ideal to bring out for the Christmas table, where the blue motif adds a classic Danish Christmas atmosphere with history and soul to the table setting.
